Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what's on the other side?

Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide.

So we've been told and some choose to believe it. I know they're wrong wait and see.

Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that wishes would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star?

Someone thought of that and someone believed it. Look what it's done so far.

What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing and what do we think we might see?

Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell. We know that it's probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name.

Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors. The voice might be one and the same.

I've heard it too many times to ignore it. It's something that I'm supposed to be.

Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me.

Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me.

--The Rainbow Connection.

I have just spent the last three days on a plot of land in Singapore. All together, I think I have slept a total of four or five hours in those two nights. I spent a large amount of time tying knots and lashing rope together. As you probably already know, I went to Camp Christine.

It wasn’t all that bad, to be honest. Aside from the dirt and grime, the sloping ground upon which my patrol slept on, and the little annoying mosquitoes, Camp Christine was almost like home. Well, alright. My home isn’t that dirty. Hah.

Seriously though, it was fun. I mean, it isn’t every day that one gets the chance to cook over a fire, or have one entire potato to themselves! We spent an inordinate amount of time lashing and tying knots. I seem to remember spending most of the first day doing that. We made a bag rack, a shoe rack, and a bedding rack. We also tugged at the twine until blisters appeared and our hands turned red. That aside, it was rather enjoyable, because there’s a certain rhythm to the tugging of a lashing and a certain enjoyment to be had out of tying knots. Or maybe that’s just me.

The weather was bearable. It even drizzled for a short while when we were setting up our kitchen shelter to cook. I must admit, it was the first time I had ever seen a kitchen shelter! Although it vaguely resembled a tent, it was far easier to set up (thank god!).

The showers were also acceptable. The toilets weren’t very dirty, and there was a drainage system! Hallelujah! Fine, I’m being sarcastic. The showers were fine, although the water was freezing, and I met with a shower that seemed intent upon killing anyone who used it (the water pressure was absurdly strong).

My patrol (Des, Ni Zhen, Xin Fang, Yi Xin, Xuan Qi and Su Yi) survived sleeping in the tent, although it was extremely hot as we had to sleep with the doors shut in case dogs ran in.

On the second night….well. The second night passed in a blur. It involved a fire. It involved the fire exploding, and a lot of hugs being passed around, along with packets of tissue. Those who were injured were sent to hospital. But they’re more or less alright now, so there isn’t a need to worry. It’s quite amazing to see the human reaction when something serious happens. We had two people sleeping over in our tent because they were either too lonely or had been from one of the patrols who had been more seriously hit. Thankfully, no one from my patrol was injured. Hardly anyone slept that night, and I spent a good amount of it outside my tent where it was cooler, talking to Rosel.

However, things more or less returned to normal the next day, when we began striking our tents and gadgets. Most of us had a pretty good time, and I have to thank my patrol for being so cooperative and for working so well together. We also have the most interesting and funniest patrol name, 7CuSO4.

In other words, camp was...fun. It was cool, bearable. Not a concentration camp, and pretty interesting. Also certainly something to remember.
